Ways to use Storytelling in the Workplace

So maybe you’ve read some of our earlier posts about storytelling.

You get that storytelling can form connections, make information more memorable, link to a person’s emotion, grab attention, yada yada ya.  But you’re not sure when and where you would use storytelling in your workplace.

Let us clear up that mystery now! Here are 11 ways you can use storytelling at work.

For Motivational Inspirational

Company meetings – Tell stories about where you came from and how that connects with serving your customers. Tell the story of what your work does.

Creating a vision – Tell the story of what you see your group or organization doing in the future and how that improves the lives of your customers… and maybe even the world.

To Teach Others How Things Are Done Around Here

Training sessions – Tell the story of how and why the training session came about. Use stories in the training to make content relevant to the work the employees will be doing. Use stories to help trainees practice how they’ll respond before they have to do it in real life.

Staff meetings following mergers or acquisitions – Share the story of how the company came to be doing what it is today. Share stories that illustrate the values and mission of the organization. Share stories that bring to life how we do things around here.

New employee orientation – Again, share the stories of how the company started and how you live, and add them into your values and mission. Rather than harp on rules and regulations, use stories that paint the picture of what we want and need from our employees and why.

To Explain Complex Ideas

Sales process – Use a past customer example to illustrate how working with you gets the prospect to what they want to achieve. Use analogous stories to relate the unfamiliar with an experience the prospect can recognize.

Rolling out a new program – Use stories about events most people have experienced then draw a comparison to the new idea so that people can put the new program into perspective.


In advertising – Tell stories about how an experience with your organization improved the lives of your clients.  Be sure to pull at those heart strings.

In social media – Share more stories about how employees are delighting your customers. Invite customers to share their stories about what it’s like to work with you.

Make Boring Topics More Interesting

Briefings & Status Meetings – Share the stories that illustrate what’s really going on. Talk about your successes by telling that story.  Share your challenges by telling that story too.

Proposals & Requests – Create the story of what life could be like should your proposal get approved. Tell the story of what brought you to this point to make the proposal in the first place.
