Getting Schooled. You Can Always Learn More about Your Topic, and Often, Your Audience Can Be the One to Teach You!

Last week, I was working on a new e-learning project with a company called Bigger Brains.

(The Bigger Brains platform and the e-learning project will be launching soon.  And you just know I’ll be sure to share all that great information right here on this website!)

I was teaching a lesson about using PowerPoint as a presentation tool – while of course throwing in my 2 cents about better ways to use PowerPoint.

Even as I’m teaching Maren, my on-screen learner, about features and functions she didn’t know were available on PowerPoint, I too was getting schooled.  Maren showed me a few tricks that I didn’t already know!  With PowerPoint, as with life, rarely does any one person have all the answers!

Keep an Open Mind and Crave Audience Interaction

There’s an old saying in training that who ever talks the most, learns the most.  It’s a way to encourage trainers to involve and interact with their learners.

What I’ve found as a presenter is that I’m constantly learning from my audiences.  I wish I was the perfect, all-knowing sage at the front of the room.  But since as one human being I can’t know everything, I find great joy in letting my audiences talk too so that I can not just help them learn, but help myself grow in the process too.

Don’t Play Mind Games with Yourself

It’s easy to get intimidated by the fact that you don’t know everything.  You may even hesitate to share your expertise because someone in your audience might know more than you.

Reality check – everyone in your audience knows at least one thing better than you do.  Isn’t it better to get them to open up and share their wisdom?  Then you’ll know it too!

What Are Some of the Best Things Your Audiences Have Taught You

Below are a few of the things I’ve learned from my audiences.

Short cuts in PowerPoint

iPad presentation apps

Names of other presentation focused books

Stories that illustrate my point

Different perspectives on presentation topics
